“Have you… have you been able to cry?” I looked away, swallowing hard. The truth was, I hadn’t shed a tear ever since I found out I was left with nothing. There was a mountain of grief inside me, but it felt frozen, held back by the fear that if I started crying, I might never stop. “I have way too much to cry for,” I replied, my voice flat and bitter. “If I start, I don’t think I can stop anytime soon.” Mia looked at me, her eyes soft with understanding, but she didn’t push further. Instead, she placed a hand on my arm, squeezing gently.

Mace added with tears trailing down her cheek. "I'm sorry..." Mace said to me as she started to cry. "I'm really... really ... sorry. For all I've done to all of us. We're doomed..." Mace begged me as she cried. "Calm down. Don't cry anymore." I said to her with a comforting tone. "Don't cry anymore." I said in a pleading tone. "Sorrow is not what you need right now, considering your situation." I added with a comforting tone. I brought out a handkerchief and dabbed her face, wiping the tears away.

She had never seen her mother lose control like this—the vibrant, untouchable Sarah Vance reduced to a shivering mass of agony. "Mommy, don't cry!" Maddy started to wail, her own tiny hands frantically trying to wipe the endless stream of tears from Sarah’s face. "Maddy will be good! I'll be so good! I clear my throat, she takes one look at me and her godson, then the music goes off. “What happened?” she asks. Trying to pry Mace off me is futile. He won’t stop crying and he won’t let anyone carry him. I sit on the couch and she follows suit. “Cathy? What happened?” she asks. “I don’t know.” Mace stops crying long enough to catch his breath. Tears coat his lower lashes, he blinks and my heart breaks. “Mama doesn’t like it when you cry, Macey. Please, don’t cry. Stop crying, okay?”
