And there she was. The Queen. She lingered at the base of the stairs, her goblet still in hand, her smile curving like the slash of a knife. “My congratulations once more, Lady Malik,” the Queen purred, loud enough for all the courtiers to hear. “May your union be… illuminating.”

He walked to the center of the obsidian floor, his boots leaving a trail of toxic, gray soot. Marek and the Alphas of the Golden Pack stood in the shadows, their eyes flickering with a sick, predatory hunger. They had seen the Mother fracture. They had heard the King’s mother screaming for mercy in the rain.
