The room fell into a brief silence after that, and for a moment, all I could hear was the faint sound of my own breathing and the soft hum of the ceiling fan above us.
Then Jane nudged me lightly.
‘Just reply him. Don’t overthink it too much.’
I nodded slowly, even though overthinking was already exactly what I was doing.
My fingers finally moved.
I’m not overthinking it either.
That wasn’t entirely true, but it was the safest version of the truth I could offer.
Before I could change my mind, I hit send.
