But I froze at the doorstep, my blood turning to ice. Astrid. Sitting in a high-backed chair, but not the Astrid I knew. Her hair was blonde now, sleek and straight, and her eyes were colder, like chips of ice. She looked up, expression blank. "What—" I started. Devon squeezed my hand. "Irene, meet Molly. She's the one I sent to lure me into your world. Posed as Astrid to get close." Molly stood slowly, her movements precise, almost robotic. She tilted her head, assessing me. She wore a bright red wrap dress, tall black leather boots, and a crown made of mistletoe balanced on top of her head. She was the most beautiful thing he'd ever seen. “Not in love? Try telling that to your face,” the woman remarked, shaking her head. “Good evening, friends and family of Parker Elementary School!” Molly announced into a gray microphone. “Thank you all for braving the cold and coming to sing a few songs with us. We hope everyone has a good time!” Nicholas stared at her, completely transfixed. He clapped along with the crowd's applause, not really paying attention to anything except Molly's smile.

Molly: "I'm really sorry about Cole, and that's all I could do," I said to her. Then she pulled away, and I wiped away the tear that stuck in her eyes. I walked to my closet, then I picked out a black flare gown. Then I paired it with a black hat, some black jewelry, and gloves. I went with flat shoes because I didn't know how long this was going to last, and I didn't want to put on heels and regret at the end.

“We found something in the scrolls—” Static. Then— “The twelve kids… they’re not the main ritual.” Silence fell. Even the monsters seemed to hesitate. “They’re replacements,” Molly continued, her voice trembling now. “A fallback. A lesser version of the spell.” My heart started pounding. Hard. Too fast. “The real spell…” she whispered. A pause. Like she didn’t want to say it. “It only requires one.” I felt Sol’s hand tighten around mine. “One newborn child,” Molly said, the words landing like a death sentence, “powerful enough to either end… or save the world on its own.”
