Mom and I were barely getting by while we waited for Dad. The long years of waiting and suffering finally paid off. So now, Mom's eyes were hot with tears as she reached out to embrace Dad. But Dad was so startled by Mom's appearance that he kept backing away. Mom couldn't walk very well. She tripped over her own foot and crashed onto the ground. She was an absolute wreck. I tried to help her up, but my hands passed right through her.

"We tried everything." The doctor couldn't even look into Kane's bloodshot eyes. "Her wolf is completely gone." Kane's massive frame swayed. He let go of the doctor's scrub top and stumbled back. A second later, his eyes rolled back, and he hit the floor hard, passing out again. Chaos erupted in the hallway. Mom's screams pierced my ears. She beat the floor with her fists, utterly broken. Dad leaned against the wall, blank-faced, and slid down to the ground. He seemed to age ten years in an instant. Streaks of gray appeared in his dark hair.

He watched as realization came to her, and she closed her eyes as everything hit her all at once. My mother is dead. Maggie collapsed; there was no other word for it. One minute, she was standing there, pale and trembling; the next, her whole body sagged and her legs gave out under her, and she fell forward. Joe caught her easily, gathered her in his arms. She was shaking with sobs, tears streaming down her cheeks, and his heart ached at her pain.

She clutched her chest, gasping for air as her face instantly turned a dark purplish red. "Mom? What's wrong, Mom?" I panicked and caught Mom as her body swayed weakly. Meryl rolled her eyes and mocked sarcastically from the side, "Oh, please, what kind of dying act is this? Are you trying to scam us?" She reached out and shoved Mom hard again. "Hurry up and get lost! Stop getting in the way!" That shove was the last straw that broke the camel's back. Mom's eyes rolled back, and her body collapsed limply to the ground. The thermal container fell from her hands, and the soup inside it spilled all over the floor.

Mom only looked down once before collapsing to the floor, fainting on the spot from sheer terror. Dad scrambled out in panic to find a doctor, stumbling so badly he nearly fell several times. Alicia and Eric stood frozen where they were, completely dumbfounded. The wind roared past my ears. Warm wetness spread beneath me, followed by shattering pain. As my consciousness slowly faded, I gently closed my eyes.

Gasping in disbelief, Mom fell to her knees, gently cradling Gramma's fragile head in her hands. Panic gripped my chest, rendering me momentarily speechless. "You and Sophie can keep clinging to each other. I'm done." I turned and walked away. Behind me, Sophie suddenly screamed, "Mom—Mom, what's wrong?!" My steps slowed, but I didn't turn around. Here we go again. Another fake illness for sympathy. But then Sophie's voice cracked with real panic. "Elayne! Mom passed out! She really passed out!" I spun around. Mom was on the floor, pale as hell, one hand clutching her chest, eyes closed.

“Mom?” Her face goes pale. Then gray. She gasps, a horrible rattling sound, and her knees buckle. “Mom!” I catch her as she falls, but she’s too heavy, we both hit the floor. “Mom, no, please—help! Somebody help!” Her eyes roll back. Her whole body is shaking. “MOM!”
