"I'm sorry."
"Don't apologize for dreams," Dante said. "They're echoes of our fears, not reflections of truth."
A long silence stretched between them. Outside, clouds drifted across the moon, casting the room into a deeper shadow.
"What helps?" Dante asked finally. "With the nightmares."
Madeleine gave a small, bitter laugh. "Nothing, really. Eventually, I wake up."
Dante seemed to consider something, his brow furrowing. Then, with careful movements, he extended his hand, palm up, between them. A small golden flame appeared, dancing above his skin.
