the words gritted out, his voice cracking with something close to ruin. Something in me stilled. My heart, my breath, my rage—they all faltered. Even on his tongue, the word sounded foreign, like it didn't belong to a man like him. I held his stare for a long time, my chest racing—up, down, up—like it was running laps inside my ribs.

“I didn’t get the chance to thank you.” Her breath shook. “Thank me? You kissed me without my permission,” she whispered. “You scared me. And now—now you’re here? Why? What do you want from me?” The corner of his mouth tilted, almost amused. “So you know who I am.” “You’re Adriano Greco,” she said, her voice trembling. “The monster people talk about.” He took another step closer. “Monster?” he repeated softly. “That’s what they call me?”

There was a hint of amusement in Aspem’s words and I slowly nodded my head. “Killian Davenport? You are apologizing?” I nodded yet again. “I was wrong. So I apologize.” I muttered, my voice incredibly low. I had always had the upper hand and everything felt so weird. But the apology was going to be worth it. Aspen sighed, “I went too far as well. About the children part. I'm sorry.” She apologized and I slowly nodded my head. She said I was too much of a monster to have children. And honestly, I did not care. I did not even want that.

Anger erupts in my chest like an angry volcano. Without thinking, I stomp in his direction, making sure to go close enough to feel his breath hitch. “How dare you keep us here for hours without any form of explanation or apology, you incompetent street urchin?! I should be thankful for the gesture, but find it fans my rage instead. “Why?!? Why do you suddenly care what happens to them? As if you haven’t already condemned them to nightly rape and endless torture? As if you haven’t taken their rights and freedom already? You think protecting them for one night in a vulnerable situation that YOU put them in makes it all better? Makes you less of a monster? You’re a pitiful son of a bitch!” Even in my anger, I regret the last line, expecting it will bring my death, but instead he just stares off toward the window. His expression is almost…sad. “You think me a monster?” he says quietly as he stands moving for the door. “You know nothing of monsters.”

I am not an angel, I am very far from that word, it hurts to say that an angel doesn't deserve to be with a monster. Monsters don’t get happy ever after, we don’t beg for forgiveness. If I open my mouth and apologize, what difference will it make? I can’t take back the hurt I caused her, I can’t take back that painful look in her eyes when she found out I was using her.
