I wanted to destroy every single piece of flesh that thought it could take something else away from this mountain. A pale hybrid—one of Thorne’s stolen experiments—leaped over a burning truck chassis, its long black claws aiming straight for my throat. It was faster than the wolves, its gold eyes tracking my movement with a sickening, familiar intelligence. I rolled to the right, the concrete scraping through the knees of my pants as its claws tore a deep gouge into the floor where I’d been standing. I scrambled to my feet, but the monster was already spinning, its heavy elbow striking the side of my face.

They spoke softly together, and Adrian occasionally glanced down at her with a patience he rarely showed anyone. Anyone could see they looked like the real couple. But I was supposed to be the real couple. I was Adrian's betrothed, the girl whose engagement had been arranged since childhood. Our first meeting had been when we were both very young, before my mother died. As a child born of vampire and human blood, I was powerful, yet could never fully control that power. My mother never once called me a monster. She would hold me and say gently, "Elena, you just haven't learned to master your gift yet."

He looked like he was in agony. But I was staring at the fresh scar on the webbing of his right hand, my entire body turning ice cold. That scar was identical to the one on the hand holding the woman's waist in the profile picture of the anonymous poster I had just seen. If I remembered correctly, that scar appeared three months ago. I was two months pregnant then, and we were walking in the deep forest. A feral Rogue suddenly rushed out. Kael didn't think twice before shielding me, fighting the beast with his bare hands.

He fired. Once. Twice. The bullets stopped the werewolf cold. “Silver, dumb ass,” Damon said with a sad shake of his head as smoke drifted from the wolf’s body. “It’ll stop your kind every time.” The fur slowly melted from the beast’s body. The bones reshaped. In death, the monster became a man again. Well, not completely a man. A werewolf still kept his fangs and claws at death.

The forest trembled under the sheer force. The Hunter roared in psychic agony, staggering, its fragments flickering, unstable. My wolf howled, muscles coiling, energy pulsing like a storm. Azrael matched my movements, silver eyes glowing, every strike precise and lethal. The core pulsed violently, then, cracked. Energy fragments exploded outward. Victory seemed within reach. But the Hunter adapted faster than anticipated. Shadows coalesced into new tendrils, aimed directly at the bond. A shadow tendril struck Azrael’s chest, sending him flying backward. My wolf screamed. The pulse of the Hunter surged it was far from finished.

The wind fanned the flames as he raced away. She felt movement and tried to turn back around to face the double threat, but Damonq moved then, his arms going around her as he rolled, tucking her body under the weight of his, one hand smoothly removing the gun and firing at the monster closest to them. He staggered back into the rail and fell backward over it, clutching his chest where the white-hot flames incinerated his heart.

I shouted through the mind link. “They’re everywhere!” Bryan snarled. “Where the hell are they coming from?” “They’re Melanie’s new pets,” Hardin growled. “Experimented monsters, half rogues and half demons.” Another hunter lunged at me with a flaming blade. I ducked, rolled, and slammed into him, breaking his ribs with one hit. The blade fell, cutting into the ground where I had just been. Bryan’s wolf howled, a sound that shook the forest. His fangs found another throat, and he tore it apart with a satisfying crack.

He doesn’t blink. Hunter: “Doesn’t matter. You’re on the list. Abomination.” He fires. The bolt is fast (faster than human). I’m faster. I catch it mid-air with two fingers, lightning crawling over the wood until it turns to ash. Celeste: “Rude.” He drops the crossbow, draws twin silver kukris, and moves (insane speed, perfect form). He’s not human. Not fully. Some kind of augmented hunter (blessed, cursed, rebuilt).

He said loudly. I nodded with my eyes glued to the ground. It wasn't because I was scared or intimidated by the man, it was more of what I felt towards him. There was that spark between us which I was afraid of confirming. “Fucking monsters.” The hunter spat under his breath as I felt a sharp ache pierce my heart. I looked up and met his eyes, furiously, confirming what I was afraid of. My throat was dry and a shiver of pleasure went throughout my body. The human bastard was my bond! How could I be bonded to my enemy!
