Julian followed, his steps heavier than they should have been.
As they entered Milo’s room, Julian felt something in him crack. The walls were covered in childish drawings, some of superheroes, others of a family crudely sketched, a tall man, a woman with long hair, and a small boy between them.
His throat tightened when he realized the tall man was always drawn larger than life, the features generic but unmistakably intended as him.
Milo bounded toward a shelf, grabbing a soccer ball that looked far too new to be well used. “This is mine. Mommy says I’ll be a pro one day.” He grinned, clutching it to his chest. “Will you… come watch me play?”
