She hated this already. Soon the building was packed, and she was dismissed from standing in the greeting line to go and mingle with the people. She looked at the clock on her phone, and it was nearing seven. She knew that would be her cue to leave. She smiled, knowing this torture was almost over. At five minutes to seven, there was a noise from the back of the building. No one thought too much about it. It wasn’t like an explosion or anything. When the music started to play, it was the theme song for one of her favorite movies that was older than her but she had watched it with Mav for the first time a few years before. He mutters, breath slightly uneven. I smirk faintly. “Almost doesn’t count.”I say laughing as I twist sharply, using my core to shift my hips, breaking his balance just enough to slip free. The door slams open as it bangs hard. The sound echoes through the room like a gunshot. As everything stops. Draven! Urghh can this man just stop already! His presence fills the space instantly. Heavy, Suffocating and from the look on his face he looks really furious. His eyes lock onto us.

I ask, still not looking. “Not well,” he says, voice strained. “But, yeah. I do. They were good kids.” Tears prick at my eyes. What sort of monsters would do such a thing? Come in here and murder innocent people? “Brynn,” I gasp. Brynn’s dorm is on this floor. Like almost everyone else, she must have been sleeping when the Silver Hunters attacked. Did she manage to get away? Is she even still alive? “I need to find Brynn,” I gasp.

And now I can’t put a halt to it. They keep coming back…back…and back, like a train maneuvering without a trick stop. I was gasping for air when I woke up from a very bad dream. It reminded me of how my foster mom tortured me when I failed to do what she instructed me to. I pulled the cardigan up to let it hug my body more. I was inside a taxicab, and I didn’t realize that I fell asleep while I was going to my mother’s hospital. The sun is already down, and the blinding lights of the city are the ones that keep the city alive. It’s kind of shocking to know that there are only a few people strolling in the city.

But her words struck a chord, stirring a memory I couldn’t quite grasp—something about a late-night conversation with the visitor, months ago, when they’d spoken in riddles about power, about secrets hidden in plain sight. Before I could ask more, a low hum cut through the rain—not a chopper this time, but a drone, its red lights blinking as it hovered above the alley. Scar cursed, raising his rifle, but the drone was fast, darting out of sight before he could fire. A second later, a sharp crack echoed, and the pavement exploded ten feet away, showering us with gravel.

The first drone arrived as a whisper, rotors tuned to slide under hearing; the second came with a camera eye and a mouth made of needles. The pack didn’t need orders to shoot. Muzzle flashes stitched red against the fog. Drones fell like black rain and detonated in small, precise pops that sounded like knuckles cracking. For each one that died, two more slid in the gaps, low and clever, skirting arcs of fire to nibble at cables and cameras. “Blade,” I said. “Already there.”

“Behind you.” Mae spun and shattered a second drone with violet force. The blast ripped through its core, then jumped to every machine connected to the same signal. Hundreds of drones fell from the sky like dead birds, smashing across streets and rooftops. The paralysis tower flickered. Every frozen body in the city inhaled at once.

Vanessa mocked, laughing gleefully. Sharp teeth pierced through Selene's limbs. But compared to the physical pain tearing away at her body, the pain in her heart was far worse. She forced open her mouth and, with the last of her strength, said, "A fitting end for you… is death… If I get another chance at life, I'll kill you with my own hands!" As her consciousness faded, Selene seemed to hear a familiar cry. "Selly!" However, she could no longer tell whose voice it was.

And every drone began to move. The street erupted into motion. Dozens of drones surged forward—some wheeled, others hovering low to the ground, their mechanical arms twitching like predators scenting blood. The air filled with the whir of servos and the faint digital clicks of synchronized targeting systems. “Move!” Damian shouted. Eli darted after him as Damian fired two more rounds. Sparks exploded from the lead drone, but the machine didn’t slow. The bullet tore through its shell, leaving a hole that glowed with pulsing red circuitry before sealing itself again.

Then the sky fills with the mechanical whine of drones . Adrian stiffens. I look up through the broken roof . Black drones swarm like angry wasps , red lights blinking, giant screens on their bellies flashing the same image over and over. Adrian’s face. Underneath, in bold white letters : WANTED : TURNED TRAITOR – DEAD OR ALIVE REWARD : 5 MILLION CREDITS NIGHTWATCH DIRECTIVE 66 – TERMINATE ON SIGHT His wanted poster loops, again and again, his silver eyes staring down at us like a ghost.
