I wonder how long I can survive in this world without turning to ash. I spent most of the day in my room. Pretending to read, trying to trick my brain into believing words on a page can hush the chaos inside me. I scroll through bookstagram, click add to cart, order five more novels I’ll never finish. Let’s be honest, none of us buy books to read them all. We buy them for the hope they carry. For the illusion that we’re better, smarter and more in control that we actually are. I tell myself distraction is healing. But even lies feel tired in my mouth now.

“Whatever this is. Fantasy? Romance? Giant doorstops with dragons on the cover?” I gasped dramatically. “Did you just insult The Name of the Wind?” “I have no idea what that is,” he admitted with zero shame. “But I’m willing to be educated.” I grabbed his sleeve and tugged him toward the shelves. “You seriously don’t read fiction? At all?” “Not unless you count playbooks,” he said, trailing after me. “I’m more of a highlights-and-scouting-reports kind of guy.” “That’s tragic.” I ran my fingers along the spines of well-worn books, pulling one free. “Okay, this, this was my favorite when I was ten. Anne of Green Gables.”

Some part of me wanted that. Not because I wanted the power. Not because I wanted to collect people like trophies. Because the thought of being wanted like that; to be chosen like that, made something in my chest go warm and tight. All because I had read... things. Books. Ones that I pretended they were "just entertainment." Stories that had made me squirm under blankets and bite my lip and tell myself I was being ridiculous. But the ones that had gotten me the most... the ones that lit my skin up and made my pulse race, were the ones where the woman wasn't lonely in love.

But right now I am reading a spectacular book called ‘Unwanted mafia king’ it's very interesting, and I highly recommend it. Flipping onto the next page, I heard a knock on the door. Oh lord! Who is that annoying person that wants to disturb me right now? I absolutely hate it when I’m reading a novel and someone comes to distract me- like hello- I am busy. If it’s possible I would just hide behind the moon and read as many books as I want without any distractions. There goes the knock again and I took a sip of my coffee and gently kept it on the table not wanting to

I replied. He nodded, “sure. I love reading books, fictional ones to be specific.” He simply replied. "Oh. I see. Me too. Romance, right?" I asked, grinning. He laughed, "I knew that was your expectation when I said fiction novels, a lot of people expect that but how on earth do you expect ME to read romance. How do you expect a mafia who is thirsty for revenge, to sit his ass down only for 'i love you's and 'i love you to the moon and back's. You must be shitting me.”.
