He hesitated, glancing at his partner.
“Who did it?” I asked again, louder this time, my heart pounding so fast I could feel it in my temples.
“She’s an ex-convict,” he said. “Just released from prison a few days ago.”
“Who is she?” The words ripped out of me.
His answer was quiet, but it might as well have been shouted into my ear.
“Lucy Blackwood.”
Something inside me went still. My tears dried in an instant. A sound came from my mouth, but it wasn’t sobbing—it was a laugh. Loud, empty, and cold.
