I crashed straight into a convenience store. Barely missed killing two people inside. Jake got a concussion. One of my friends broke her arm. I walked away with nothing but a scratch- and the weight of knowing it could’ve been so much worse.

I exhaled shakily, pressing my forehead against the cool glass of the car window thinking about how much my life had gone off track. Everything in my life felt like it had spiraled into madness, and I was sitting right in the middle of it, unable to pull myself free. Something slammed hard against the side of the car, right where my face was. I jerked back with a gasp, heart leaping into my throat.

I may have been an impulsive psychopath — as Gunnar liked to put it — but when it came to what I did best, I made sure not to mess up.
