A high-pitched digital wail cuts through the room. The speakers blow out with a pop. The lights die. The toy stops dead. Silence. Heavy, ringing silence. I lie there, panting, my heart hammering against my ribs like it wants to escape. Alex is slumped over me, his breathing ragged. "What..." I wheeze. "What the fuck was that?" Alex pushes himself up.
