"You're lying, Ms. Lamont. You're not our mommy." Ivana sneered cruelly, "I'm not lying to you. Yara never gave birth to you. That's why you naturally hate her." Hearing that, Cheryl shoved Ivana in anger. "You're talking nonsense! Even if Mommy is annoying, how could she not be our mother?" Ivana froze. She hadn't expected this reaction after Cheryl learned the truth. Lucas quickly comforted her, saying, "Ms. Lamont, even though you're not our mommy, Cheryl and I still like you."

My chest tightened. The drive to St. Benedict’s blurred by in a haze of red lights and panic. When I rushed into my mother’s room, the rhythmic beeping of machines greeted me. She was awake, pale but smiling faintly as the nurse adjusted her IV. “Hey, sweetheart,” she said weakly when she saw me. “Mom…” I sank into the chair beside her, clutching her hand. “What happened?” The nurse smiled softly. “She had a small panic episode after watching the news, but she’s stable now.”

The comedy series is still playing, people laughing loudly in the background, but suddenly none of it feels funny anymore. I slowly lower the popcorn bowl onto the table. My appetite disappears instantly. An hour later, I hear soft footsteps again. I already know it’s her before she even appears. Mother walks into the sitting room wearing one of Grandma’s loose house gowns, her wet hair packed behind her shoulders. She looks older than I remember. Smaller too. Like life slowly peeled pieces off her over the years. She hesitates before taking a seat beside me. Immediately, I curl further toward the edge of the couch unconsciously. That tiny movement doesn’t escape her.

“We just have to keep moving.” We started walking away from the car. The road was dark and empty. After a few minutes my phone buzzed again. I almost didn’t want to look. But I did. It was a live video this time. It showed Rose’s favorite stuffed animal sitting on the ground. Then the camera pulled back. It was our house. Still burning. And standing in front of it was someone I thought was dead. My mother. She looked straight at the camera and smiled. Then she spoke.

She, no doubt, was far more bewildered by the events that had transpired than I. "Good morning, Mom!" I called her attention, trying to sound upbeat. "Have you packed your things?"

Mary’s slightly accusatory voice came from outside. Hearing her tone, I looked at the door with pure disdain. I didn’t care that she was my mother-in-law anymore. "Mom, I hope you don’t take this the wrong way, but some things just need to be said. Heaven’s watching. You’re old enough to know better—why are you still messing around with that Black man?" Her face turned pale and then flushed red. Under my stare, she stammered, "Veronica, are you sure you’re not misunderstanding something?"

After that, she sat on the couch, holding my portrait as she waited for death to claim her. I glided over and looked at her. Her breathing was getting faster, and her pupils started to dilate.
