I felt too drained to face anything from him. The drive to work felt long. My fingers tapped the steering wheel the whole time. I kept thinking about the dream and how real it felt. When I reached the courthouse, I forced myself to breathe slowly. I stepped out of the car and straightened my clothes. I needed to act normal. Inside the building, officers greeted me with small nods. I answered them quietly. I just wanted to get to my chambers and prepare more. I reviewed the case file again. It was an organ trafficking matter, something dark and heavy. The suspect was a police officer named Max.

The elderly policeman adjusted his reading glasses and peered closely at my face. After looking me up and down for a long while, he snorted and said, "If you have nothing better to do, go find a hobby course to take, young lady! We're not a community center!" I hurriedly grabbed him by the arm. "I'm not lying, sir!" The elderly policeman said grumpily, "You claim to be an abused housewife, but your skin is soft and supple. Are you even of age? Get out of my sight!"

He brought his nose close to Skipper's mouth. Skipper shook his head quickly. “I’m clean. The mole—our guy at the precinct—called. Someone tipped off the inspector. She’s already on her way.” Lucian shoved him back, running a hand through his hair to calm his raging nerves. How? How did the police find out? He’d only picked men he trusted for this operation. That meant someone... was playing him. “There’s a snitch,” he muttered under his breath. "Someone is working with the police here."

I didn’t say a word to anyone, I just swat down putting my hand on my chin, tapping my leg on the ground waiting for the policemen to come and do their work. The policemen came in after a while to arrest the doctor who duped me of one million dollars but then he did something that I never expected from him.

If she can’t walk, she should just chop them off!” He suddenly realized he had sounded too harsh. He sighed and toned down his speech. “Mom, you know…”

This was all his fault. Aaron Bridges was my captain back at the fraud department. He volunteered one of his detectives for a temporary transfer to homicide, and I managed to be the lucky winner. I silently curse him and everything else before making my way up the front steps. Making my way towards the captain’s office, eyes start following my every move. I knew they were talking about me. I tried to pretend that it didn’t bother me, but man was it hard.

The police officers who heard Declan mention this name immediately turned to each other with confused and apprehensive eyes. No one dared to answer Declan's question. Anger was evident in his bloodshot eyes. The silence of the police officers made Declan's anger explode even more, his face flushed with rage, the veins in his neck tense.
