The door clicked shut, leaving the house too quiet again. My books were still spread wide open in front of me, but none of the words on the page held. I stared down at them, pulse skipping every time I replayed Maverick’s smirk, his voice.
“You’d be bored without me,” he said finally, standing.
I scoffed, not daring to look at him. “In your dreams.”
But my smile betrayed me, lingering even after he sauntered out. I stayed there with the books open, the ink bleeding into meaningless shapes, and admitted silently to myself that maybe he was actually right.
