“Your Highness.” A deep male voice called. “My love.” A woman’s beautiful voice spoke with a smile on her lips. “Happy birthday.” The male voice said. The man and the woman danced, when suddenly the scene changed. “The king is dead!” someone screamed. “FATHERRR!!!” the woman’s voice wailed in anguish. The scene changed once again and things became fast-paced. “Protect the princess!” “Take her away to escape!” Then, the tall and heavy doors suddenly closed, trapping people inside it.

“This is very bad form, Prince Aolis. You don’t just leave your bride at the alter because a practically naked woman comes running in.” The room goes dark around us and I grab the front of his shirt. “Speak of my mate like that again, Lord Elas, and you will see why I’m called Aolis Stormbringer.” I hold his gaze for a moment, letting the fire of my words shine in my eyes. “And if you think so little of me that I would leave your daughter just because a random woman came running into the wedding, then you don’t know me at all.” I watch as he gets control over his emotions. “My apologies, Prince Aolis. This is all very shocking.”

I spring up from the table knocking it over and causing other men to turn their heads to watch the scene ,in a split second I pull back my arm clenching my fist, I throw it forward with force that knocked on the man I played with backwards when it connected, the dull thud and gasp of breath confirmed that I winded him. The chattering of the crowd fades away when others leave the place I heard someone joining them to help but someone else stopped him informing that I'm the fifth prince. That conversation in the background took me off guard as many people in the states didn't know I was the fifth prince because I always maintained a low profile to stay out of trouble.

“Look around, Ghost. I’ve been out of that marriage for ages. I’ve been here, living my life without him breathing down my neck. This deal isn’t about breaking free—it’s about moving forward. I agreed to it because I want to. And honestly? Prince is… sweet.” “Sweet?” I repeat, my voice dripping with disbelief. Her calm stare is unrelenting. “Yes. Sweet. Whatever your problem is, it’s not mine to fix. Now, if you don’t mind…” She gestures toward the door, waiting for me to leave. I glare at her for a moment longer, the weight of her stubbornness pressing down on me. Finally, I turn and storm out, my frustration boiling over. Sweet. She thinks he’s sweet. Fucking sweet.

"I didn't realize how fast you've grown. You've become exactly the person I hoped you'd be—independent, intelligent, goal-oriented, sophisticated, and of course, a beautiful young lady." I couldn't help smiling. "I couldn't ask for anything more." "Thank you, Dad." I squeezed his hand. "You know, there's something I've always wanted to tell you." "Oh?" He raised an eyebrow. "What is it?" I smiled. "I may find my prince someday, but you'll always be my king." Dad's eyes immediately turned glassy. "So dramatic," he muttered, though he was smiling. "I love you so much, Dad." He pulled me into a hug.

The spearmint sharpened, cool and green, and my pulse thrummed like it had when he’d leaned in, his breath a whisper of wild mint and rebellion: *“Princesa, respira (Princess, breathe.)” “Ti bêl fi (Sweet girl),” she crooned, patting my knee. My chest still feels tight, like the air in the room isn’t enough. It fades eventually. It always does. I swing my legs off the bed and cross the room, careful not to make noise even though I’m alone tonight. My backpack sits by the desk. I unzip the front pocket and dig around until my fingers close around a small crinkling wrapper. Peach candy. I unwrap it and toss the candy into my mouth. The sweetness hits my tongue immediately, sharp and artificial and familiar. I suck on it slowly, letting the flavour settle before biting down.

Alex jumped in quickly, saying, "Ms. Emerson, don't bother looking. He's not even half as handsome as a regular dude. No cool scars, just plain ugly. You won't give him a second glance." Her hand hovered in the air for a moment before she pulled it back. 20 minutes were up. In the last moments before everything went dark, I mustered all my willpower and said, "Mom, I swear off chocolate forever..." Fiona's eyes narrowed, panic-stricken as she pushed the hair from my face. The second she saw my features, she let out a gut-wrenching yell. "Cole! Cole!" Alex was stunned. So was everyone else. "Ms. Emerson... his name isn't Cole, is it? The guy who brought him said his name's Chester..."

I was starting to think I would burn from this game. In Brum’s hands was a wraith of purple flowers that looked amazing, a whole bouquet. He didn't have wrap them so properly, it was so thoughtful of him. He bought them just to play into the excuse we gave, I thought. But it still made me happy. He reached me, doing a slight bow and my folds just creamed that very moment. “My princess.” His voice! Fuck. Him. I wish I could tell you that the smile on my face was still fake. I wished it was but it was not.
