Amira was sound asleep upstairs, curled up with her favorite stuffed sea otter and the blanket Nate’s mom had crocheted for her.
Nate and I slipped out the front door quietly, hand in hand, letting the screen creak softly behind us. The air was still warm, the pavement cooling under our bare feet as we wandered down the sidewalk, lit by a mix of porch lights and flickering lamps. It was peaceful.
He bumped his shoulder against mine. “So, how many cannonballs did Damien do before he almost broke your spine?”
“Four. Maybe five. I lost count after the one where he nearly took Zach’s eye out,” I laughed. “We need to make ‘no aquatic warfare’ a house rule.”
