They went straight for Mr. Pervis, nipping at his ears and fingers. He brushed them away, stomped them with his boots, squished them in his fists. All the while, Loretta wailed in pain.

“With me dressed this way, will that make it easier for you to follow through on our wager?” He grinned. “Definitely.” Georgia hustled in, carrying a tray with three bowls on it. She set the bowls in front of Gabe and Emiline, then one down for herself. “I hope oatmeal is all right.” Emiline nodded. “Yes, it is. I have not tasted oatmeal in such a long time.” Emiline and Gabe were silent as they ate, although Georgia rattled on as she tried to keep the conversation flowing. Gabe kept sneaking glances at the adorable woman next to him, and when she peeked back, he grinned…even if food was still in his mouth.

I didn’t make it far, just up to an abandoned park, it’s where my car died, it wouldn’t start anymore but it was okay, that’s as far as I’m going from here. Shaking my head, I put the vehicle into gear and drive away. After putting some distance between me and the hotel, I stop at a diner on I-94 and grab some lunch. The waitress doesn't seem to mind when I pull out my laptop and search for my next destination. When I see a link to another possible sighting, I click on it and read the screen while I eat my breakfast. It turns out that the soul eater has been very busy lately and at this rate, if I don't stop blacking out I will never catch her in the act. When the waitress walks by, I grab her arm and ask, "Can I get another of these sandwiches and some more fries to go?" She glances over at me and nods before making her way to the back room

She figured that his face was merely blending in the dark with all the others. Lotus grunted annoyedly and the werecat waiters stepped away quickly. She slithered back from the table and turned her head to the sky. With her eyes closed, she hummed softly. Two orbs of light appeared directly above her and the crowd grew instantly still. Everyone watched as the blue and red lights swirled around each other, growing brighter. They lifted into the air a couple feet over Lotus’s head illuminating the entire crow

The city sky had grown dark to a mellow gray, the kind that swathed everything in gentleness—buildings, trees, people. Rain still lingered in the air, shrouding the windows of **Chapter & Soul** in a soft mist. Inside, the world progressed more slowly, more softly. It was perfumed with old books, chamomile tea, and something sweet that Lena had baked and not labeled.
