Mystical Key Novels & Stories

Panni whispered, remembering Grace’s final human words. She looked at the Altar. It wasn't just stone. It was a resonator. And beneath the white silk, she saw it—a small, unassuming iron key, the same one from the cottage in the Alps. It wasn't made of gold or silver or charcoal. It was made of iron and rust. "Jinyan, the resonance!" Panni cried. "They aren't using the Master Key. They’re using the Acoustic Debt! They’re feeding off the sadness of the ancestors!"

Everything was unnaturally quiet. "No birds," Wesley observed. "No animals," Magnus added. Lyra's expression grew solemn. "They know this place is sacred." The crystal key suddenly pulled itself from my pocket. It floated toward the largest tree in the forest. Its trunk was wider than a castle. The runes along the bark began to glow. The key fit perfectly into a hidden keyhole. With a soft click... The earth trembled. Massive roots slowly parted. A spiral staircase descended into glowing darkness. Cold air rushed upward.

"Just let me borrow it for a few days. I'll return it to you as soon as the showcase ends," Natasha had pleaded back then. "This showcase is really important to me." I hadn't even paused for a second before I lent the emerald pendant to her. "Be careful," I reminded her. "That was the only thing my maternal grandpa left to me." "Don't worry. I'll cherish it as much as I cherish my own eyes," she swore confidently. The emerald pendant never did return to my hands.

You can't bite a shadow! Faith looked at the silver key. It was humming again. She realized the key wasn't just a piece of metal. It was a remote. “Leo! If I can't hit them, can the machine?” Faith asked. “The Stabilizer!” Leo realized. If you can trigger a high-frequency burst, it will blow the gray mist right out of them! “How?” “There's a button on the side of the key's head! Press it and hold it against the moonstone necklace Killian gave you!”

"So this is new territory for both of us." Maya considered that for a second, some of the tension in her shoulders easing at the admission. "So I'm the control group." "You're the control group." "Wonderful. I've always wanted to be a scientific first." Chloe draped a string of tinsel over Maya's shoulders like a battle medal, ornaments still swinging from her other hand where she'd clearly been mid-decorating when the whole ordeal started. "You," she said, jabbing a finger at me, "owe her something enormous. Jewelry. A vacation somewhere with zero relatives. I'm thinking beach."

“And I think… I think I know what we need to do.” As I said this, my eyes caught sight of a pedestal I hadn't seen earlier. On it was a glowing object—a key, it seemed, that was pulsating with magical energy. “The Key of Harmony,” the voice echoed one last time before fading away. “Use it wisely, Catalyst.” As I reached for the key, I heard a commotion from above. Raised voices, the sound of a scuffle. Xander and I exchanged a worried glance before hurrying back up the stairs, Cyrus and Kara close behind.

It stretched across the path, a shimmering barrier that seemed to separate the ordinary world from what I assumed to be a realm of magic and wonder. Raziel stopped us here, then he took a single golden key out of his pants pocket and put it in the lock on the gate. With an audible click the lock opened, and Raziel pushed the gate, motioning for me to go inside. I walked through the gate with him following me. He stopped to shut it and relocked it with the little golden key. He put the key back in his pocket then grabbed my hand, much to the dismay of my mark. Luckily, I had been learning to ignore it. Not that it was easy to do, but it helped the tiniest bit.
