The Underground Fighter The underground fight club smelled like blood, sweat, and cheap beer. Concrete walls, dim red lights, and a chain-link cage in the center where two men were beating the shit out of each other. The crowd roared every time a punch landed. I stood near the back, notebook hidden in my jacket, trying to look like I belonged. My name is Caleb. Twenty-four. Rich kid turned journalist, chasing a story on the illegal fight scene for a big exposé. I was not supposed to be here. But the deeper I dug, the more I needed to see it for myself.

Well, I wasn’t sure what Kai did. He was cold, not saying much around me. But he was a nice guy and had his shit together. The guys often joked that he was the “Tommy” of the group, because for the life of them, they did not know what he did for a living. They were all a handsome, accomplished bunch. Nathan was the glue that held them all together. “Uhm… hi guys” I said awkwardly.. Biting my lips out of embarrassment. I quickly ended the call with Lisa.

“I don’t even know you.” He pushed me gently but firmly against the wall, his tall frame crowding me. “That’s the point of the masks, isn’t it?” His fingers traced the neckline of my gown, brushing the swell of my breasts. “You’ve been teasing me with these looks all night, Lila. Now I want to play.” My breath hitched. “How do you know my name?” “I know everything that happens at my parties,” he murmured, lips brushing my ear. “And right now, I want to know how loud you can moan for a stranger.”

Every time their eyes met, it was like a system ping. He felt exposed. No avatar shield. Just him, in jeans that had seen better days and a hoodie that smelled like his apartment. He drifted closer when the group thinned. “So. Real names now?” She turned fully, drink in hand. Some kind of gin thing. “Riley. You?” “Alex.” It felt weird saying it out loud, too ordinary after months of ShadowStep. “Didn’t expect you to be this...” “Short?” She arched an eyebrow, that sharp smirk back.

He was excited. “ Eleo, you need to sleep so I'd appreciate if you were less active because I have a bad feeling that you won't still fall asleep after I read this,” I heaved before sitting down. “ Anyway, the name of tonight's story is ‘When The Yogurt Took Over' and it's tagged as a science fiction,” that was something I found odd since the name wasn't exactly related to science in anyway.

She yelled. “Yes Ma’am.” Stella came and answered. “Are you deaf? Ive called your name twice!” “I'm sorry I was cleaning the windows” Stella answered in a low voice. “Whatever! Go and make 2 glasses of lemonade in 5 minutes and send Zac in my bedroom. Go! Hurry up!” Caroline commanded. Stella went and made 2 glasses of lemonade and went into the master bedroom along with Zac. I noticed Stella taking Zac with her to the master bedroom which didn’t happen often. I quickly ran and took my father along with me and stood outside the bedroom and peeped through the side of the door.

She pointed with her finger and ran it down these books looking for a particular cover. “I have been saving this story for the right moment.” She directed her son to sit in the chair and when he sat down, she gave him the book. It looked ordinary to him, but it was obviously special to her. “This is the story of a young man who found a friend while on a journey. It is called ‘The Tale of Meru’.” He looked surprised because he was half expecting another history lesson. “Are you sure you have the right book?” “Yes, Yvayn, I am. I am not as boring as you would like to think I am.”
