I state to myself, and my two teasing kids chuckle, but I ignore them and try to give myself a small pep talk.
“Okay... it’s Jamal. Bambi. He came to talk. I can talk. I hope I can. No, I can. It’s Jamal. Not Bambi. Bambi gives me panic attacks. Well, it’s the same, but... it’s more intimate, so... it’s Jamal,” I say for the last time, ignoring the giggling that my sons can’t seem to stop, then get up, take a deep breath, and before I open the door, I wipe my sweaty, trembling hands on my jeans.
