He was telling me about his parents' cabin out of town and how beautiful the lake was in the summer. "Sounds beautiful," I commented. "I would love to see it," I said, dripping with sarcasm. I don't want to see that! "See what?" came a deep voice behind me. Ugh, Nathaniel. Here for trouble as usual. "My cabin," Mark replied, while I smartly retorted, "Mind your own business." I wasn't about to give this guy any ideas. "You look angry, Caroline," Nathaniel chimed in, his voice laced with a dangerous undertone. "Maybe you should cool off a bit."

He looked thankful to Nathaniel for helping him and I was equally relieved too. Mark, who had been watching silently, murmured, “This wasn’t our fault.” “Mark, apologize,” My uncle ordered. Mark grumbled something under his breath but didn’t argue. My uncle turned to Nathaniel’s brother and said, “I’m deeply sorry for the trouble. It won’t happen again. It wasn't intended at all.” Nathaniel was still staring at me. Did he realize we were mates as well? Or was it something else? Did he recognize me as his old enemy, Alec?

They are gathering, plotting, waiting. Nathaniel paces behind me, his footsteps heavy on the wooden floor. His arm is still in a sling, but he moves like a man who has forgotten the pain. He wants to go. He wants to leave tonight. He wants to fly to Switzerland, confront Crane, and end this once and for all. I see it in the set of his jaw, the fire in his eyes. Marcus sits across from me. His face is hard, his eyes tired, dark circles underneath. He has been staring at the photograph for five minutes without speaking, his coffee growing cold beside him. The fire crackles in the wood stove. The shadows dance on the walls.

But she simply ignored Nathaniel and focused her gaze on me. I could not blame Nathaniel for that. He was only protecting us after what happened to them earlier, especially when none of them get the chance to meet Joshua's mama. "What do you want? Did Marcos know about this?" I tapped Nathaniel's shoulder to ease him off. "Just want to talk to you, Lady Nathalie, please?" She requested me in a pitiful tone. "It's about my sons, Joshua and Justine." Before I could open my mouth, I enhanced my werewolf senses and crawled them throughout the place to make sure we could get back to the boat alive. Marcos and I had undesirable conversations before my wolf decided to leave the island for good.

Nathan crosses his arms on his chest but says nothing. Mara applied the paste to my ribs first, I winced as it burned through my skin sharply. I sucked in a breath. “Hold still,” she commands. I glared at the wall, looking at the carvings to disrupt my attention from what she was doing. “You wince too much,” Nathan says mildly. “I bet you’re enjoying this.” I said while wincing some more. “A little.” he said flatly. Mara's hands move to my jaw, pressing it firmly. My wolf growls low in my chest, now is when it decided to show up, but when I needed it, it abandoned me.
