"Stubborn captain. Okay. Together." The man turned into an alley between two old buildings. Snow covered the ground. We followed careful. I whispered. "He stopped. Near the end of the alley." Kade slowed. "I see him. Stay behind me." We approached slow. The man stood under a dim light. He held the sign again. SASHA. Kade called out. "Hey. You. Why that name? Who are you?" The man smiled slow. "Kade Volkov. Nice game tonight. Your brother would be proud."

I didn’t get five seconds. Three girls were already waiting by the sinks, all fake tans and fake laughs and real venom. I recognized them instantly regulars on Rowan’s I*******m comments, the ones who called him “daddy” unironically. And no I'm not some stalker, I just happened to notice one night, you know while digging up about him. “Wow, look who it is,” the blonde in the middle said, tilting her head like she was talking to a lost puppy. “Captain’s little charity case.”

He stood up and walked over to the captain, who was still slumped against the wall, clutching his bruised throat. Baraka crouched down, picking up the broken half of the combat knife from the water. He tossed it into the captain’s lap. "Tell General Nyosi," Baraka said, his voice cold, steady, and entirely human, "that her leashes don't work on me. And if she sends another squad into the dark, I won't hold back the wolf next time." The captain didn't answer. He just stared in absolute, trembling silence as the teenager stood up and turned away.

“Captain?* I texted back. *I thought Niko was our captain?” Three dots appeared. *LOL no. Niko's just been filling in. The REAL captain has been away for months. But he's coming back tomorrow.* My stomach dropped for reasons I couldn't explain. *Coming back from where?* *No one knows. He just disappears sometimes. Weeks, months at a time. But when he plays?* Another text. “He's never lost. Not once. The leader pulled a knife and slashed at Kai’s chest, opening a long cut through his shirt. Leo raised his gun but the angle was bad. If he shot he might hit Kai. Kai headbutted the leader, then drove a knife up under his ribs. The man gasped and dropped. But it was too late. From the shadows another figure stepped out. A man Leo recognized. One of his father’s oldest captains. The one who had been in every meeting. He pointed a gun at Kai’s back. “Kai Nakamura,” the captain said. “Time to finish what we started three months ago.”

This must be how human girls look at those pop stars. “Maybe a shirt too,” Catrina mumbles and conjures a shirt. The man smirks as he puts it on. I’m sad he put a shirt one. I can tell Catrina is too. “I’m Alan, Captain of B Squad, Great Neck Pack under Alpha Edumand Rodes,” Alan holds out his hand for Catrina. They shake and then he turns to me. His hand is bigger than my face. I shake it. “We are going to the coven house,” Catrina tells him.
