I’d recognize that number even if it were scrambled with a million others. Lana had excused herself. I was thankful she wouldn’t have to clean after us too. I started a tentative walk to and from the kitchen, moving the glassware, wine bottles and plates from the table. “Let me.” Jack chipped in, guiding me to the kitchen stool and clearing the rest of the table. He seemed to have a lot on his mind but dared not probe. How do I tell him the strange number that rattled him out as my parent’s killer was back for blood, and messaging me again? Who even are they? I was growing more apprehensive by the minute. Jack finished and strolled to my side, squatting in front of me.

“If you need a man so badly, go to Dolph in prison. Or call your mother and let her arrange another one for you.” He stepped back. “I’m done with you. Don’t look for me again. You’re ungrateful, and I regret ever standing by you.” He turned and walked to the door. Jack’s voice was still in his head - the insults, the yelling, the hate. And Patra had only deepened his frustration. He left the hotel. Kelvin got back home and parked Clarita’s car. Then Jack appeared again. “I didn’t expect you to return,” he said. “I thought you were going to run away.” He looked at Kelvin coldly. “Now I need to rethink you.”

“Tell her I’ll call her back. I’m in the middle of something important.” Claire nodded, closing the door softly behind her. Jack exhaled deeply, running a hand over his face. He needed to think, and he needed time. There was no way he could gather the money quietly, not without raising questions. And going to the police was too risky—if the evidence leaked, it would be game over. His phone buzzed again, this time with a message. He snatched it up, his heart racing as he read the words: “Tick-tock, Jack. 47 hours left.”

Jack answered me while his fingers continued running everywhere on my phone screen. Jack's expression changed. He stopped scrolling and stared at the screen for several seconds. “What?” I asked again, my uneasiness increasing. “This man knew all the blind spots in that mansion," he replied grimly. He moved the phone screen towards me. He zoomed into the service corridor. The man in black stopped at an intersection. He didn't hesitate. He turned left. Jack immediately switched to another camera. The man appeared again. Every time, he seemed to move through the mansion without ever stepping directly in front of the main security cameras.

What did he mean by 'that wouldn't be possible'? "I can't go back." Jack said and plopped his back on the bed. "Why can't you go back?" Kyra was getting irritated. "Do you want me to get killed?" Jack drawled lazily. Kyra frowned, and then realization hit her, The wolf hunters! "Oh... I forgot." Kyra facepalmed herself. "Why wouldn't you? I'm not Jax, neither I'm I Jace. So you aren't obligated to remember." Jack grumbled with a trace of jealousy in his voice.

Joker gives me a look that is impossible to read, but then again, he was always impossible to read. “So Tess is back, and I now have an almost five-year-old daughter. On top of that, someone threatens to kill them both. Let's find that threat and terminate it. Jack, I need you to reach out to trusted resources to learn about her past. Where she has been, friends, work, and anything else useful. I know that you had her phone already when she came in. Has it been of use?”

I don’t even know how this happened. I don’t know who is behind it. I don’t know what is real and what is not. So no. I’m not doing that. “I understand,” Jack said quietly after a moment, his tone more careful now. Good. Because I didn’t need a lecture. I needed efficiency. I reached for the file sitting beside me, the one Don had sent earlier, and opened it without hesitation. Jacob Grey. If he thought I was walking into this blind, then he clearly doesn’t know me at all.

Jack said, “let him go.” I curled my fingers, forming a fist. Let him go? After everything we have gone through, after days of chasing this lead, I couldn’t just let him walk away. “We’ve been on this damn hunt for a week, Jack. A week. And we’re no closer to finding anything. What makes you think this guy won’t give us what we need?” Jack sighed. “We have to think this through, Zach. Be smart. He’s not going to give us anything now. We don’t have the time or the patience for this. Let’s regroup. We’ll find another lead.”

Jack looked up. The shadowy person stood still just looking back. “What the hell?” He looked around but it was clear it was just them. “I have a gun,” he reached behind his back. The stranger immediately bolted. “Stop, your bastard,” He gave chase. The stranger was just gone. He suddenly stepped onto something. He looked down and saw a note. He immediately recognized the paper. He bends down and picked it up. “Sir, what is going on?”

"I was wrong, Yvonne. Never trust a man." Moonlight cast an ethereal glow on her face. The sound of the waves crashing against the shore was loud in the quiet night. I didn't know what was going on, but my heart felt heavy for some reason. A long, long time later, Mom threw her phone into the sea. Then, she gave me ten dollars. Grabbing my shoulders, she said, "Yvonne, can you go and get me a bottle of water? Don't tell anyone I'm here, alright? If you do, you won't see me again!"
