“You know, I didn’t think we’d ever get here again.”
I pause, setting down my fork. “Neither did I.”
He hesitates, then asks quietly, “Do you think we’ll ever, go back to what we were?”
I take a breath, considering it. The question deserves more than a reflexive answer.
“No,” I say finally. “We can’t go back. But maybe that’s not the point.”
He tilts his head, curious. “Then what is?”
I meet his gaze, steady. “Maybe it’s not about fixing what broke. Maybe it’s about building something new from what’s left.”
