"I say that ALL THEATRES must be shut down! All idle time must be FORBIDDEN! Return to your houses of worship!” It reminded Caitlin of the people who preached from street corners in New York City. In some ways, nothing had changed. They came to another gateway, right in the middle of the street, with a sign that read “Temple Barre, City Gate.” Caitlin was amazed that cities actually had gates. The large, imposing gate was open, for people to pass right through, and Caitlin wondered if they closed it at night. On either side stood more guards.

Then another tree moved. Then another. The forest itself was opening. A hidden path appeared where none had existed before. At the end of the path stood a massive stone gate nearly forty feet high. Its surface was covered with frost. At its center was an empty keyhole shaped exactly like Adrian's brass key. Above the gate, ancient letters slowly glowed with blue light. Adrian read them aloud. "Only the one who carries the First Light may enter." Before anyone could move... A child laughed. Soft.

I tossed it and the Trenland plane ticket Lucas had booked for me into the trash. Without looking back, I walked toward the security gate for my flight to Mordeva.

The gate split. Golden light poured through the crack like sunrise forced into a grave. For one breath, no one moved. Not the villagers huddled along the old throne road. It bled through the seams of the mourning gate in thin, sharp lines, cutting across the black stone road, across the floating blue-white soul lights, across the faces of the people we had just saved.

an upperclassman said enthusiastically, pointing at the machine beside him. I looked at the blue-lit sensor and paused for one second. "What, worried it won't recognize you?" the upperclassman joked. I smiled. I took my ID card from my bag and pressed it steadily against the scanner. Beep. The green light came on. The gate opened. "No," I said as I stepped through. "This time, it definitely will not go wrong."

He angled the screen toward himself, but I leaned forward, trying to see too. ‎ ‎He shifted it away. ‎ ‎“Zayden,” I hissed, grabbing his arm before I could stop myself, “show me the damn phone.” ‎ ‎He hesitated for maybe half a second before lowering it enough for me to see. ‎ ‎I wish he hadn’t. ‎ ‎It was the front of my house. ‎The gate. ‎The driveway. ‎The expensive security lights that always made my father brag. ‎ ‎Only now… every light was off.

The gate has its vigorous railings that are painted with brown, has an ivy organized like a downfall leaves that has been plastered onto the wall in the sides, and there were lanterns that Justin knew shimmers at night, with its faint glow that makes the road shines with yellow light. Jane fumbled for her card, the one she uses to enter the mansion with the scanner in the front gate that is secured with a fingerprint system. The building's silhouettes suddenly became the dark night sky and the lights from their windows suddenly were twinkling. "Isn't that beautiful?" I asked when I saw a broken stoplight, the red light was blinking and the green and yellow once didn't seem to work. I thought it was aesthetically pleasing, under the gloom of the night, along the empty streets and silently passing cars. The slow blinking of that stop light seemed to harmonize with the quietness of the evening. I looked at Edgar and he was frowning at the stop light.
