Monday Our first session started promptly at 7:30 in the morning in some dank back office at the large McDonnell complex. Azimuth, elevation, tracking, scanning, frequency… yeah it all came fast and furious. They threw so much at us so fast that I literally couldn’t spare three seconds to think about Maggie and our day yesterday. Class supposedly ended at five, and the guys were planning the evening’s adventures. Being the only married guy, I begged off. So, naturally, I quickly garnered the nickname “Old Man” for my lack of suaveness.

I asked him and his lips quirked with a ghost of a smile. “Home.” He replied to me. I could see it in his beautiful brown eyes that he wanted to probe me about who had hurt me, but like he knew that I was in no mood to talk about it, he refrained from asking me about it again. Instead, he asked another question. “What’s your name?” “Nightingale.” I replied to him and the little smile he gave me as he realised how accurate his nickname was, made my heart race. “So, you really are a bird.” Someone said.

With wide eyes, she looks up at mine, searching and probing. “You’re a Nero?” she asks in a breath. I nod, but realize that those listening can’t see it. “My name is Nova Ainsley. I grew up on Korpillion. I worked for Horne Energy, but for lunars before I escaped the planet, I was making illegal Neron weapons.” “The weapons maker?” Arden asks, and I can tell, her mind is reeling from all of the revelations.

He glanced at me, and I wiggled my eyebrows. “What is your code name?” I guess it was something along the lines of Devil’s Spawn or The Grim Reaper. Not that I have seen this man in action; but something told me that men pissed their pants whenever his name was called out. “Dawn, Shadow, and Ace of Spades.” He grumbled, and I pieced my mind trying to understand what they could mean. Dawn? If it was dusk, I would understand. But Dawn? The man looked like he had a dark cloud following his trail.

A guard shouted, rushing into the grand hall where Alpha Richard and a few elders discussed loudly. “From?” Alpha Richard asked coldly. “From our spy, with the code name Nightingale.” Hearing that name, Alpha Richard's frown eased. Nightingale was one of the spies he had done a lot to pull over. He was an ambitious man, so it was difficult to make him change sides, but what could money and power not achieve?

The cage door slammed shut behind me, the roar of the crowd swallowed everything. I flexed my fingers. Rolled my shoulders. The black combat suit was tight across my chest, a second skin built for movement, not comfort. The half-mask sat flush against my face. Smooth. Featureless below the eyes. Luna Ghost. That was who I was tonight. Not Lia. Not Aurelia Veythorne. Just a shadow with claws. Across the pit, Crusher was already waiting. Crusher of the Howling Pit, a name that carried across rings.

Chapter 42 – Boys Will Always Be Boys Antheia’s POV When the dark veil of the night came above us, a loud voice came calling for us again. “Come down now love birds. Dinner is ready!” It was Crowden. “Love birds.” I chuckled and continued, “Two were the ones named after birds. Those scavengers. I wonder why your parents named you that way?” “My mom’s name was Wren. It was also a name of a bird, so maybe he named us as Raven and Crowden.”

“What is her name?” He shook his head. “She has no name. We only call her The Queen.” “What was her name?” Jo pressed the barrel of the gun against his forehead. He closed his eyes, his mouth moving as whispers of Russian that sounded like a prayer came out. She almost laughed aloud. What god would save a Vampire? Especially an unsouled one. “She has had many names.” His eyes were still closed as he answered. “Give. Me. One.” His lips were trembling as he whispered, “Asteria.”
