Exhaustion had her sleeping early the night before, but it seemed that meeting Celine had brought on a new set of night terrors that had her screaming deep into the night. Things were more vivid now. Before, her nightmares always came out blurred. The men in the black masks were always taking her, pulling her towards the dark. These dreams scared her the most because she couldn’t go anywhere, and she always felt powerless.

She ran her hand on the wall and finally found a switch she turned on the chandeliers which lit one after the other illuminating the whole room but what she saw made her scream so loud that she woke up screaming. Ragnor shook her to wake up and held her tightly when she opened her eyes. "Hey, I am here. It's okay," Ragnor consoled. Clara stopped screaming and calmed herself down hugging Ragnor and breathing heavily. "I had a terrible dream. It was so real," Clara said catching her breath. Ragnor stroked her hair gently and spoke softly to her, "Tell me, what was the dream about." Clara who was still terrified from the dream just repeated one word, "Vampires, lots of vampires."

They either want nothing to do with me since I'm with what's considered a dangerous and criminal organization, or they want me more, naked, on top of my bike. Suddenly from behind me I feel claws digging into my sides and I scream. Noticing hot breath on my ear, I scream louder. I sense nothing, then the pain sears through my shoulder blades. Feeling blood trickling down my arms and hands, the pain hits me so hard that I think I'm going to lose my mind. I turn around to face my attacker and this time in the light shining from my bedroom, I see the blood soaked claws shimmering in the faint light. Those claws don't belong to anything I have ever seen in my life. They must surely be connected to a monster.

The city of Aethelgard never truly slept, but at 3:00 AM, its pulse slowed to a low, rhythmic hum. For Clara, this was the hour of the "Shadow People." She lived alone in a cramped, third-floor walk-up—a space that always smelled of old cedar and damp plaster. It was the kind of apartment where the floorboards groaned under the weight of nothing at all, and the shadows in the corners seemed to have a depth that defied the laws of light.

Clarence heard the clatter outside of the great hall where he sat drinking after dinner. It must be the group he’d sent to harass the Black Dane Pack. It seemed too early for them to return. This irritated Clarence and he ordered some nobody to bring them into the great hall. He wanted them to answer him and tell him what they’d done.
