“Hi Mom, I am ready to leave,” I said to my mom as soon as I rushed downstairs still struggling to tie my shoelace. She was in the kitchen preparing something. I grabbed the first thing my eyes landed on as my lunch which was an apple and a bottle of orange juice and tossed it into my bag hurriedly. “Alright” she simply said not even taking a glance at me making my eyebrows furrow in confusion “What do you mean alright? You promised to drive me to school” I shot at her with knitted brows “Oh did I? It must have skipped my mind” she answered her eyes fixed on whatever the hell she was doing “Just take the bus, I can drive you tomorrow,” she said dismissively “The bus? The fucking bus stop is thirty minutes from my damn school and slept because you promised to drive me to school” I hissed “Language miss” she warned but I paid her no mind “I'm quite busy right now. I will drive you tomorrow or tell the driver to drop you off” she said irritating me even more “You said the same damn thing yesterday, why do you keep doing this to me?” I asked on the verge of tears “I promised my husband breakfast, so I am busy,” she said happily “Of course, your husband is more important than your child” I shot at her, she raised her eyes to meet mine finally and opened her mouth to speak but before she said anything I stormed out of the kitchen and out of the house slamming the door loudly behind me. That is just how it’s always been between me and my mom. We don’t see eye to eye. Never really have. And as much as I love her because honestly, she’s the only family I got, she still manages to get under my skin every damn time. Today wasn’t any different. Junior year started a few days ago and after barely surviving freshman year I decided this was going to be different for me, I was going to stay away from everyone's faces and be as invisible as I could be. And so far it has worked out well, I get to school pretty early and hide in the corner with my head buried in my desk speaking to no one. But today I woke up pretty late and if I was taking the bus there was no way I would get to school as early as I wanted to, I would still be early but not the one where I could freely walk the hallway without having to have my eyes glued to the ground as I moved. But now thanks to my mom I couldn’t say what was waiting for me in the four walls of Hawthorne Academy, the thought of skipping school crossed my mind. It was that bad. All my life I have been picked on because of my size and have been bullied serially, it wasn’t something new to me, every time we moved to a different town I always had an inkling of hope that it would be different but it never was. When we moved this time I had the same hope and when my mother broke the news that my new stepfather got me admitted into Hawthorne Academy, I was over the moon everyone knew about the prestigious HTA where only the top one percent get admitted and somehow I was going to school there. I anticipated the change and had the hope that it was going to be different. Not only was I dead wrong, it was worse, worse than I could have ever imagined. From the moment I stepped my foot into those gates it was hell after hell. I was bullied, mocked, embarrassed, and trampled on daily for the whole year I spent there. My life was basically a living hell but I didn’t dare quit or even get the courage to mention it. I kept telling myself to hold it in, and it was my ticket to get into the Ivy League university I have always wanted to attend all my life. That has somehow kept me going. At first, it was just name calling and snickers whenever I walked through the halls and in class but somehow I bumped into Dylan Lennox spilling hot chocolate all over him and that had to be the worst day of my life, I tried to wipe the stain off with my hand and made him more anger that he emptied everyone’s drink on his table all over my head leaving me soaking wet as everyone laughed. I was somehow blacklisted just by that and everyone avoided me like a plague. No one spoke to me or sat close to me during classes or lunch, and Amelia Alistair the school queen bee took it upon herself to make my life more miserable. She and her minions poked and taunted me whenever she felt like it. —- As I got off the bus I took a deep breath before I began walking the rest of the way to school. With every step I took, the nerves in my stomach twisted even more. I could feel the anxiety crawling up my chest, making it hard to breathe right. From the corner of my eyes, I saw different types of cars zoom past me, shiny, expensive, loud of different luxury brands. The closer I got to the school gate, the more my legs felt like jelly. My fingers were wrapped tightly around the handle of my backpack, and my palms were sweaty, sticky even. My heart was pounding, and I couldn’t bring myself to look up. I kept my eyes glued to the ground, counting cracks on the sidewalk and hoping that no one would notice me.Before I could move away or do anything he wrapped his arm around my waist pulling me closer to him, my back hit his chest and my face grew red but I didn’t fight it. I felt the warmth of his body on mine and the heaving of his chest as each breath escaped his lungs. He moved slowly behind me and I followed his rhythm swaying my hips from side to side. My body temperature got hot and it felt like I was burning up from the inside. It got even more intense when he started grinding his hips on mine. He leaned into my ear and whispered something but I didn’t hear him. All I felt was his hot breath on my neck making a shudder leave my mouth before I could stop it. “Do you want to get out of here?” He asked and my whole body froze instantly what May said came running back to me“He just wants to fuck” I shifted away from him, instantly tucking my hair beside my ear awkwardly. I pulled May away from the guy she was dancing with and dragged her off the dance floor.“Ouch don’t pull my hands
The process of getting ready before we had to leave the house was nothing short of chaos. We were running everywhere, clothes scattered on the floor, May and I arguing for the fifth time about what I should and should not wear. There was nothing in my box that looked like something I wanted to be in, thanks to May for packing my suitcase. She kept throwing different things at me and I kept throwing them to the side because I did not want to wear a dress. After a while of back and forth, we finally settled for a pair of denim shorts. I was supposed to wear a tank top with it but I hated the idea of my arms showing. It was one of the things I was insecure about. So I settled for a long-sleeve bodycon top. It hugged my chest too much and I didn’t like the way it felt but it was either that or a tank top. May was in a short mini plaid skirt and a top that was somewhere between a bra and a tank. It had one strap and stopped right under her boobs. She looked good in it obviously but that
I pushed the door open and the house was quiet except for the soft hum of the ceiling fan in the living room. May was still on the couch exactly the way I left her. Her head was tilted back, her hair all over her face, and her arm was dangling over the side. The pizza box sat on the floor beside her. I took one step inside and her eyes shot open so fast I nearly screamed“Jesus May,” I yelled clutching my chestShe sat up rubbing her eyes as she looked around like she was trying to figure out where she was“How are you just waking up? It is past ten already” I pointed to the wall clock“I woke and didn’t find you anywhere so I went back to sleep” she yawned “Where did you disappear this early? And why are you all dressed up?” She asked staring down at the outfit I had on“I went for a run,” I said quietly kicking the shoes off my feetMay squinted at me like she wasn’t sure if she heard right. “Since when do you run,” she asked “Since today I guess. It just felt good the last time
I was about to take a sharp turn when I tripped over my leg and fell face-first on the pavement.“Fuck” I winced touching my forehead to find out I had a cut on it and it was bleeding out“Get away from me!” I shouted still on the floor, unable to bring myself to get up and keep running. He had slowed down and just jogged towards me.“Help!” I shouted but there was no one around just me and a boy who might kill me and ditch my body in the woods“Do you need help?” He asked when he stopped in front of me, I wasn’t expecting those words to come out of his mouth“Why are you following me, let me be” I tried to catch my breath“Because you dropped this and I have been trying to give it to you” he held up the phone in his hand. I quickly touched my pocket to find my phone and it wasn’t there. I quickly got up from clearing my throat in embarrassment.“Oh,” I said trying to take the phone from him but he raised it over his head“Wait, you thought I was chasing?” He asked with a small smile
We made sure the coast was clear before stepping out of the bushes we hid in and walked back home briskly making sure we had our eyes on our backs at all times.“Oh my fucking God” May crashed to the floor as she shut the door behind her“That was a lot” I let out a deep breath still holding onto my chest, my heart rate was still through the roof“We might get killed instead of having a fun summer” she laughed rolling on the floor“I honestly don't know what came over me” I snickered“Glad you did it, those scumbags deserve worse,” she said“I am sorry for pushing you to join them. I didn't think jerks would exist in such a little town” she apologized “They are everywhere trust me,” I told her “Looks like we have nowhere to be” May got up looking around like she was already bored“You could go find out where the next party is at” I teased“Oh I would, trust me but at least not today when there aren't people looking to kill us” she laughedWe spent the day binge-watching our favorite
May kept looking at me, waiting for me to say something, and so did the guy who came over. They both stared at me, waiting.“Alright fine” I whispered“Yay!” May cheeredWe went over to their table, which was a family seat that could accommodate about eight people. Three guys, including him, and two girls were at it, and they didn’t look happy to have us over.“Hey guys” May waved at them all bubbly before taking a seat“Hello” I mumbled not meeting eyes with any of them “You guys are here for the summer,” the boy with blond hair asked “Yes we are,” May told them“Usually people leave the town for the summer not the other way around,” a lanky dude with spiky jet black hair said, he had his hand over the shoulder of a girl who kept glaring at us “Well Nova grew up here so we decided to come” May explained while I stayed quiet“Is that so?” Their attention turned to me making me groan internally “I don’t think I know you,” the blond guy said“I don’t either” I looked them straight i
