Humans had always disrupted, weakened, and contaminated everything they touched. My wolf growled fiercely deep inside me, and a name I'd rather lose the whole fortune to the Remington bloodline and die than let it exist as it reverberated through my skull—uninvited, dangerous. I open my eyes again. “And if I say no?” The response is immediate. “The probability of Earth’s survival decreases to less than three percent.” Of course it does. I let out a breath. “Yeah. Thought so.” I start pacing. The space adjusts with me, shifting subtly to match my movement. Everything here is responsive. Everything is watching. “You’re asking me to stop being human,” I say. “To become something else. Something you can use.”

What else did I have to live for? I thought of my brother Laurent; he would take over the gamma position in my stead; all those didn't seem to matter to me anymore; if Cara was not mine, then I didn't care; but if there was a tiny chance, a little possibility here, then I was willing to take my chances. A human walked up to me, but when he got close, I recognized that this was no human; this strange creature was taller than any human I had ever seen; its eyes were all black, giving it away it's inhumanity more and I could see it's claws too.

In the back seat, a man engrossed in his laptop displayed a striking handsomeness, his countenance mirroring the wintry night's chill. Wordless, he cast intense, cold eyes toward Thomas, acknowledging the unspoken urgency. Ignoring the sounds of the night, he returned to his work, a beacon of detached focus.
