Marriage First, Mate Second
“Yes, it is. You will make a lovely bride Sophie. And we will bring your groom back to you, this I swear.”
I can tell my wife is pleased by this. Her happiness truly is my own. I can feel it, the warmth suffusing my soul by the simple act of her smile. I am a hardened man. I do not require much. Or at least, I didn’t. Until there was her. Now all I do, I do for her sake. I do not deserve her. This level of happiness should be reserved for saints. Not sinners like me. Not even repentant ones. But life is not fair. Never has been. And so I will accept this unearned gift, and protect this undeserved happiness with my life.
