I let out a sharp breath and pushed the bedsheet away. “I really thought it was dye, I promise.” I defended myself, though not with much confidence, feeling quite confused. I truly believe that was bleach. I believed it was simply the natural shade of blue that would make it appear whiter. “Take a look,” she said, pulling out the bleach she had brought and opening it for me to see. It is nearly colorless, much like water. I trembled in disbelief; this was worse than anything I had ever experienced.

Just how I liked it. By the time I finished, my scalp burned slightly, a prickling reminder of the lengths I was willing to go. I washed my hands, the cold water soothing against my skin. As I rinsed off the bleach, droplets splattered against the porcelain sink, swirling down the drain. Then a honk startled me. Short. Loud. Annoying.

“Well, what can I get you today?” “I’ll go for the breakfast set,” I replied. “And another blueberry lemonade soda, please.” “Of course! It’ll be ready in a few minutes.” I thanked her and found a spot by the edge of the deck, overlooking the waves. The view was even better in the morning—less dramatic than the sunset, but cleaner, more hopeful somehow. As I waited, I watched a group of tourists squeal with excitement as they sprinted toward the shoreline, where a row of jetskis were being prepped. A couple of them were already taking off, slicing across the water with ease.

I splashed the cold water on my face, letting it sting me awake. Piece by piece, I cleaned myself up, as if by washing away the dirt and blood I could also scrub away the ache inside me. My fingers untangled my hair, my nails scraped grime from my skin. When I finally straightened, I felt lighter—though the heaviness inside hadn't left.

Lance asked, following me down to the hospital as we spoke. “It’s not something that you will understand if I explain with words,” I said nervously. The image of his drawer flashed in my head again and my smile got brighter. “Try me,” he insisted. “Okay, he poured bleach on his mate’s clothes. Trying to fix his mess and entire problem he went online to look for a solution and he saw where they asked him to use soda. Then he poured soda all over his drawer,” I said it all in one breath. Lance took a second to comprehend but then he said, “What?!”

he screamed, stepping back. I grabbed the bleach bottle and hit him on the side his head as hard as I could, causing him to step backward. I took advantage of his momentary unbalance as he rubbed his eyes, knowing that I only had a second. I unscrewed the cap from the bleach bottle and threw the contents at him, causing him to scream out in pain as bleach covered his face and hair. I grabbed the broom and, finding sudden strength, rammed my foot into the wooden handle, breaking it in half.
