The gossip swirled into a frenzy. Someone even leaked a clip from our ceremony—a close-up of Jonathan's devastated, red-rimmed eyes fixed on me as James and I stood together. Overnight, James and I were thrust onto a public stage of scandal.
I jolted out of bed, intent on explaining everything to James and apologizing for the storm. When I opened my door, he was already there, his hand raised to knock.
We looked at each other, and he spoke first. "It's okay. It's just noise. I can handle it," he said calmly. "I was just worried you wouldn't sleep, so I brought you some milk."
