Raff looks shocked at the accusation and a bit scared. “Woah there princess! No one went through your things or read your spell book. I flip through the rest and blank pages sift by until the book ends and all is gone. It ends this way. They simply fade. Words on paper. I crumble on the floor, tears falling freely. It is sad. Everything is sad. The world is sad.

The decorations I'd spent the afternoon arranging mocked me, as empty as our marriage had become. The next morning, the clamor of movers woke me. Workers dismantled the furniture I'd lovingly chosen, hauling it away. I blocked their path, demanding answers. Just then, Daniel sauntered in, his arm protectively around Vivian. She shrank at the sight of me, whimpering, "Jesse's glare is terrifying." Daniel shot me a scowl. "Quit scaring her." I stared, unflinching. "What are you up to? Why are you gutting my house?"

I yanked my hand away, "I want a divorce. Didn't you see the court papers?" Our struggle disturbed the neighbors. Lights began turning on in windows, and curious heads peeked out. Embarrassed by the scene, I pulled him to a nearby café. He spoke first, "You look much better lately. You must have been overworked at the company. I can grant you an extended vacation." I laughed dismissively, "Mr. Carter, I formally notified you of my resignation in writing, and you signed it." Ethan's face darkened, "I refuse to accept that.”
