Her laptop’s screen was displaying a chaotic battlefield from a historical documentary she was meant to be studying. Down the hall, Delilah curled into the corner of the velvet couch in the private sitting room, one hand absently resting against the small swell of her belly, a soft cashmere blanket, a gift from Calix, was draped over her even though the evening was not a cold one. A pregnancy journal lay open on her lap, neat handwriting filling the pages. She read through her notes — baby names she wasn’t ready to share yet, cravings she laughed at, and fears she wouldn’t admit aloud.

" what happened, what did the book do," Sebastian asked and she looked at him in his eyes. " It ruined my life, my family" a tear dropped from her eyes " It possessed my innocent sister, causing her to kill her father, mother, and brother… this book made my hand fill with the blood of my very own sister" " You killed her?" Delia buried her face in Sebastian's chest " I had no choice" she cried. And I'm left wondering, what exactly is in this book and what the hell have I gotten myself into.

Delia smiled, and glanced over at Alex again; this time, he stared daggers into her. What was going on? "Do you know Alex from somewhere?" she blurted out before she thought better of it. Delia grabbed her bag and hauled it over her shoulder. "No. I don't. I see James and Stephanie coming in," she said, pointing toward the library's main entrance. "I'll catch you next shift." She nearly raced toward the side door and disappeared around the corner of the building. "What was that about?" she asked. "She looked like you killed her puppy or something, Alex."

“You shouldn’t worry about her.” “I should,” I sighed. “She almost killed me and my children. I need her taken off the grid. I can’t imagine her coming back to kill us again.” “The security here is tighter than even what the president is used to. Don’t you worry. No one can get to you.” But I doubted that he was right. Delia was a snake. She always found a way to get into places that was closed off to her. How she had grown from that girl in the restaurant who couldn’t blackmail me to this girl who had shot me, poisoned me and kidnapped me is still a mystery. This was a growth that she had done in such a short time.

They walked the east side of the territory, down to the creek that ran along the lower ridge base, which was half-frozen still but moving, the ice at its edges lacy and intricate and the water underneath doing its continuous patient thing. "You're leaving Sunday," Delia said. "Yes." "Back Thursday." "Thursday or Friday. Depending on how the packing goes." "How much is there?" She thought about the apartment. The careful, minimal life she'd built there. "Not much," she said. "I was never really settled. I think I knew that even when I was there. I bought furniture that was easy to leave." She paused. "I have books. And Fig. And some kitchen things my mother will want."

⸻ LENA The hotel room was unbearably quiet after Christian left. Alone with my thoughts, I picked up the phone and put it down at least a dozen times. Who could I even call? There was no one I trusted to give me an unbiased opinion. My situation was too close to home for my mom or sister. There was always Delia, but she’d been with Tig since she was fourteen and still believed in fairy tale endings. Her reality didn’t include a small child, a manipulative ex, or growing up with a father who forgot her and a mother too broken to leave the house for years.

Demenicus who had been watching the whole drama, asked Delia gently, "Why can't you, Sweetheart?" "I can't… I simply can't." Heathrow who was having the time of his life took this opportunity to say, "Let me tell you why she can't. Little Delia doesn't want to reveal her eyes because it's no longer yellow, it's blue. She has killed an Innocent." Handogan jumped to his feet in disbelief. "This is definitely not true, Delia. You didn't kill your mother, Right?" Delia's tears were flowing from her eyes like a stream. She was confused, shocked and embarrassed. Her eyes were still on Heathrow, trying to understand why he would expose her.

Although Delia had been trying to crack the seal code set by her father, his level was too high for her, after all. Otherwise, Delia would never have been attacked by the Venom Guild and ended up in such a miserable state. Delia explored the things in the small space of less than one square meter. She had exhausted the dry rations and various treasures she carried with her. Only the sword was left in the lonely space. Delia sighed at her poverty and walked down the mountain. No matter what, there must be food at the foot of the mountain. Even if she could not catch pheasants and rabbits, she could find a young man and ask for some food by relying on her beauty.
