I heard the distinct, heavy click of a lock turning.
I was alone again.
The sunlight felt mocking now. The pink walls felt like they were closing in. I looked at the books—were they my favorites, or just decoration? I looked at the vanity—was it for me to use, or for him to admire his possession?
I slid out of the bed, my legs wobbly. I went to the window. It was large, but the glass was thick, sealed shut. Outside was a beautiful, walled garden. Blooming flowers, a manicured lawn, a high stone wall covered in ivy. It was a prison yard dressed up as a paradise.
