Her smile sharpened, and she angled her body slightly toward him, a practiced move, as if she belonged at his side.
Jax’s gaze didn’t linger. He stepped to the front of the room.
“Pandora. Penelope.” His tone made their names sound like paperwork. “Outer perimeter for Spring Rivers. You’ll learn the ropes out there.”
Pandora’s mouth tightened. “Outer perimeter?”
“You’re new,” Jax replied, flat and final. “That’s where new people start.”
A couple of men volunteered to “guard” them with easy smirks. Penelope giggled at the attention, already basking. Pandora didn’t. Pandora watched Jax watch Sophie, and the calculation behind her eyes didn’t match grief.
