Most of the time, it crept in quietly, through policies, signatures, quiet meetings in glass rooms where no one raised their voice but every word weighed a ton. And then, if you choose, for the people you love.” I let the words settle. “I claimed mine,” I said. “On an altar. In a council room. In a hospital hallway. In a classroom full of sticky‑fingered pups. Every time I said, ‘No. Not like this,’ I was rewiring something that had been rotting for generations.”
