She was still in college back then. Her roommate in the bunk below had suddenly snapped, lunging forward and biting straight into the neck of another girl who had come to check on her. June still remembered it like it had just happened. Her roommate had lifted her blood-soaked face, jaws stretched wide, chunks of half-chewed flesh still clinging between her teeth. Strips of meat dangled as she stared straight at June, a wet, horrifying sound coming from her throat. Over the past four years, the world had been overrun with zombies. Everywhere you looked, people were panicking, barely holding it together.

The first zombie broke through the defenses, its rotting fingers grabbing the edge of the deck as it climbed up! "Ah!" Screams erupted instantly. The zombie was bloated. Its eyes hung on its cheeks as it lunged straight at me. "Clarissa!" Hans yelled, immediately raising his gun and aiming at the zombie in front of me. The next second, he was immediately drawn to Winnie's scream. "Hans! I'm scared!" He hesitated for a second before immediately turning his gun toward the zombies near Winnie. My heart sank to the bottom of my stomach.

Three zombies stumbled into view. I dragged my cats under the bed and curled up beside them, holding my breath, not daring to make a sound. On the first floor, a resident was so reckless that he lit a candle while showering. I knew he'd be the first to become zombie chow. The zombie had once been a beggar, mangy hair, yellowed, rusted teeth. Starving, it tore into that resident's belly with sharpened nails, feasting with savage delight.

Meanwhile, the zombies had already begun swarming up from below. The Soldatos immediately fired their submachine guns continuously, putting so many bullet holes in the attacking zombies they might as well have been sieves. Papa's back was broad and reliable in this apocalyptic world. I feared nothing as long as he was there beside me. When we finally rushed out of the apartment building, I realized that the scene outside was far more horrific than I had ever imagined. The streets were littered with burning vehicles and mangled corpses missing a limb or two, and zombies swarmed the streets in hordes.

All day, I hustled for cash and apologized, trailing Snowy and cleaning up whatever he wrecked. At twenty-three, fresh out of college, I'd been all ambition. I was gonna be somebody. Two years later? Bottom of the food chain. I felt like apologizing to the sewer rats. Still, the four of us stuck together. Survived every crappy day side by side. And now the apocalypse was coming. Zombies. Strong. Fast. Everywhere. One snap of their jaws and you were done. Sure, my cats could take down chickens, ducks, mice, rabbits. Feed them wolves, whatever. Didn't matter. They couldn't shield me from zombies.

Until one day, while sitting in the corner of a banquet, I overheard them talking about the north. The northern vampire nobles had suddenly grown rich.
