We can do something?” “Cedric, I'm sorry, but we can't.” Nova sighed. “He's already been bitten. By sundown, he'll be a completely different person...he'll be a Zombie.”

Bones and blood… Dark and twilight demons. It’s cold. It’s so cold. No feeling. Cold – at least I’m used to that. The zombie sat motionless six feet from the brightly burning campfire and stared at it with an unblinking gaze. Damn flames. I hate fire. Fire burns my blood. It eats up my spirit.

Nothing was safe from the masses of zombie killers and, just six months after the appearance of the first zombie, there was very little life left on the planet. I took another sip from the bottle of pear water and head over to the front door again. With the bat in my hands, I felt instantly safer. Being weaponless was the fastest way to get yourself killed, aside from just being plain stupid. Thankfully I wasn't stupid, and I certainly wasn't planning to die anytime soon.

Yet, something held her back. In an attempt to ease her conscience, she asked, “Your community is adept in fighting the zombies, correct? Once I set this virus loose, there will be an increase in numbers.” The oversized woman chuckled. “We’ll simply herd them in the direction of the beasts.” A thought suddenly struck Olga. “What happens when the zombies are eliminated? The beasts are used to dining on zombies, correct?” Dr. Mac shrugged. “They’ve been around longer than anyone really knows and have always managed to find food. The zombie crisis is still young in comparison. I’m certain that they’ll adapt.”

She doubted a zombie would be able to locate her there, even an advanced zombie. One of the things about zombies that stayed with them, no matter how much of their thinking and motor skills returned was the fact that they had poor night vision, depth perception, and were color blind. Those factors went in her favor since the opening to the root cellar was beneath a very realistic looking shrub that was attached to the trap door. Its coloring varied from those it was amongst only by the slightest degree and, unless you ran your hand over it, you’d never guess it wasn’t real. Combine that to the fact that it was nighttime, and she felt safe in her selection of hiding places.

Before she realized what was happening, the zombie sank those newly formed fangs into Kendra’s forearm. Screaming from shock, fear, and pain, she struggled to free her arm. Taken by surprise, Rex wrestled for a few seconds to gather his wits. When he did, he wasted no time in leaping forward and driving his blade into the zombie’s temple. With its powerful fangs embedded into Kendra’s arm, when it slumped to the ground, the abomination took his wife down with it. “My arm,” Kendra wailed as she fell to her knees. “Those fangs are stuck in my arm. I think they’re in the bone!”
