Nova The café smelled like burnt espresso and lemon floor cleaner. The last customer had left half an hour ago, but I was still there wiping down counters that didn’t really need wiping. It was easier than going home. Easier than sitting alone in my apartment with my thoughts pressing down like bricks on my chest.

It was exactly what anyone would need on a hot Sunday morning. Starbucks was just a few blocks away from it, still, Café Day was never short of customers. The majority of students preferred Café Day due to its not-so-soaring-the-sky rates. Plus they rarely wrote the names on the cups wrong.

The server called Lucaa’s name and she went up to pick up her order before coming back to sit down. We both took a sip of our coffees and set our cups down. This was our favorite cafe because apart from the fact that they served excellent coffee, the customer service was impeccable and the whole vibe of the place was calm and relaxed. It was the perfect place for us to kick back relax and talk without having to worry about getting kicked out. “How’ve you been, mama?” Lucaa asked. “I’m okay. I mean, Ale’s great so I can’t really complain,” I said.

The smell of coffee hits me stronger as we move deeper into the bookstore, and suddenly my stomach twists. “Oh no.” Cillian’s attention snaps fully toward me instantly. “What?” “The coffee smells weird.” He stares at the cup in his hand like it personally betrayed him. “You asked for it.” “I know.” I let out, scrunching my nose. “You drank half already.” He says, looking confused between me and the coffee. “I know!” An older woman near the fiction shelves glances toward us briefly, smiling softly like she finds the interaction adorable. The realization hits me immediately. We look normal. Like a couple. Not a mafia king and emotionally unstable pregnant survivor. Just… people.

Aurora Gabriel took the book and slowly opened it, and Christian happily picked up the book to continue reading. After that, they just fell into their own world, so when immersed in each word on the page, sometimes Christian would start a conversation, Aurora Gabriel also smiled.
