I stumbled back, my hand flying to my face, breath coming in uneven gasps. Hayes stood in the doorway. He wasn’t wearing his jacket anymore; his sleeves were rolled up, and his expression was terrifying. His eyes narrowed into slits as he darted between Matthew and me. "Hayes! You're home early," Matthew said, his voice perfectly casual, as if he hadn't just been threatening me seconds ago. Hayes didn't even glance at him. He kept his eyes fixed on me, on the red marks his friend’s fingers had left on my skin. "I asked a question," he said, voice dangerously low. "What is going on in my family room?"

There was a long pause as Dice stared calmly at Elijah, his expression blank and emotionless, not breaking eye contact with him. "You got some powerful people on your ass," Dice remarked, crossing his arms against his chest, waiting for Elijah's reaction. "Why?" Elijah didn't budge as he stared back at Dice, not saying a word, and he didn't give anything away, nor gave any hint to Dice as to what he was feeling by those words. "The Hayes... the rat works for the Hayes family, mainly Dean Hayes." Dice paused again for another second, making sure his words were completely understood.
