Anna was furious, she dialed his number again, but an electronic woman’s voice drifted into her ear. “I’m sorry, the number you called is unavailable. Please try again later.”

Dammit. I leave a message on the server. Do not go in to see F. Repeat, do NOT go in. Wait for further contact. I leave a string of numbers in which my phone number is hidden in code. It could be broken by the LIL, but it might take them a little time.

It felt like a staring contest where no one could see each other’s eyes. Then, for the third time, the line went silent. I stood there staring at the Call Ended screen. My skin felt cold, despite the sun. I tried to call the number back, but a recording came on immediately: “The number you have dialed is not in service." A burner phone. I leaned my back against the tree and looked up at the dorm windows. Someone was playing a game with me. I put my phone in my pocket and walked into the dorm. And I had no idea who it was.

Each arrival brought another team, hotel staff, or event organizers. Never Liam. Her breathing began to grow heavier. She grabbed her phone from the glass table and called him again. Once. Twice. Three times. None of the calls connected. Liam’s phone was off. Chatrine’s eyes widened. “What is this...” she whispered. She tried again. Still unavailable. Nearly ten calls, all failed. She covered her mouth with her hand, barely holding back a scream. How is this possible? “No... Liam would never turn off his phone at a time like this...” she whispered hoarsely.

Nothing else. “If you ever need our services again, you call this number. We handle problems that normal people cannot handle.”

Please let that have been a dream. Slowly — cautiously — she reached for her phone. Her fingers hovered above the screen. If the call log wasn’t there, she would never drink again. She unlocked it. Recent Calls. Unknown Number. 12 minutes. Her heart started beating louder. She tapped it, half expecting more. There wasn’t. No follow-up call. No messages. No missed attempts. Nothing. The absence sat heavier than anything else could have. If he was weird, wouldn’t he have texted? If he was curious, wouldn’t he have tried again?

Not a text this time. A call.
