POV: Martin Patience was a discipline I had learned young. Not from Felix's father, who had never troubled himself to teach me anything beyond the implicit lesson of what it felt like to be the secondary consideration in every room you entered. Not from my mother, who had her own survival to manage and had done it with a tunnel vision I couldn't fault because it had kept us both alive and fed and housed, which was more than most managed. Ten days of watching and noting and giving him the space to bring it to me the way I trusted he would, because he had promised and because I had stopped doubting his promises sometime around the fourth Wednesday afternoon. The words echoed around the empty chamber before silence swallowed them again. Many thoughts swirled in his head as he watched the fire. How many years had it taken to arrive at this moment? How many lives had the journey cost? Enough that he had lost count. But one thing was evident. It had taken a lot of patience for him to get to where he was now. Everyone mistakes patience for inaction. It is not. Patience meant studying your opponents and making a move only when you were sure of victory.

I glanced at her. Her expression remained calm. Unshaken. “You are supposed to sit with it,” she continued. “Let it settle. Let it unfold in its own time.” I exhaled slowly. “That feels like doing nothing.” “It is not nothing,” she replied. “It is patience.” Diane snorted softly. “That’s a fancy way of saying confusion.” Madam Lavinge ignored her. “If you rush to understand it,” she said to me, “you will misunderstand it.” I frowned slightly.
