Stanley had been patient for three days. That was longer than he usually allowed himself to wait after a plan failed. Patience was a tool, not a default. He used it when the situation required it and set it aside when it became an excuse for inaction. This situation required it.

It is not a matter of patience, I can deal with that.” I argued.

She didn’t believe me. Maybe I didn’t either. Patience, I reminded myself, is just a prettier word for waiting to strike.

When silence greeted my ears in the next couple of seconds, I realized the person had to be on the phone. Then he was talking again, “What do you want me to do? Bash her over the head a second time? It sucks but we have to wait.” Another pause. “Patience is a virtue after all.” My slow-functioning brain was working overtime now, catching up with the words being said and using it to kickstart the blank space in my memories.

And he said, very quietly, before he walked out to make the call he needed to make alone: “Eighteen years.” Just that. Two words. The door closed behind him. Daniel and I sat in the silence. Outside, New York went on without us, loud and continuous and completely unchanged by the fact that everything inside this room had just shifted on its axis. I looked at the name on the page. I thought about patience. Real patience. The kind that does not waver or adjust or second-guess itself, that simply continues, year after year, invisible and certain, until the moment it no longer needs to be.

“I’m sorry. I’m just getting tired of the training, that’s all. Shouldn’t I have gotten past this stage by now?” And shouldn’t I be the calm one and Anna the irritated one? When did that change? “Patience is what you need right now,” consoled Anna. “Not everybody gets it right instantly. The hard work and practice is what makes it all worth it when you finally achieve your goal. So chin up, clear your mind, and let loose of that frustration. Let’s continue.”

I thought about Rivera at the kitchen table in the early mornings, before Louis was awake, the specific quiet of that hour and his hands around his coffee mug and the way he looked at me sometimes when he thought I wasn't noticing, with an expression that contained things he was still learning to say.
