he says, calmer now, his voice almost careful.
“He didn’t,” I whisper quickly. “I swear.”
“Your sister, then?” he asks, his tone more questioning now.
“No… it’s complicated—”
“Alpha! There’s a possible breach on the south border!” a warrior shouts from a distance.
Martin growls, tension snapping back into his body.
“We’re finishing this later,” he says firmly, his eyes lingering on me one last time.
Then he turns and runs toward the forest.
Moments later, I hear the shift—bones, movement—then silence as he disappears into the trees.
