The trees thinned suddenly, just enough for a clearing of standing stones to rise ahead. Pale, monolithic shapes - half-buried, etched with spirals, thorns, and moons. Mist churned at their bases like boiling smoke.
The horses balked. All of them. Galen dismounted first, calming his mare with a whisper and firm hand. I followed, then Rylan, the others reluctantly behind. As soon as my feet hit the earth, I felt it vibrate beneath my soles. Like a heartbeat.
