Shannon quickly covered her mouth to stop herself from screaming, silent tears rolling down her face. She watched in horror as all the other guys were thrown into the hole before they were covered in soil until they could not be seen anymore. MJ left as soon as the gang members started throwing the sand into the hole to cover the first six feet below, and Shannon remained to watch the rest of the show. She was frozen and numb, she could not even take out her phone to record with the fear that she would get caught.

“But now he knows I’m watching.” Her mouth curved faintly, like she recognized the move. “Welcome to the mess,” she said. I didn’t mind messes. Mess was where stories started. Mess was where people showed who they really were. And something about this…this wasn’t just a scare tactic. It was a signal flare. Someone was pushing on the Ravens’ perimeter. Someone was trying to learn where we bled. I glanced toward Shannon onstage, her smile bright, her hips moving like she owned every eye in the room. She caught my gaze for a second, and I gave her a subtle nod. Be sharp, it said.

When we turned around we found that all the lunas and betas were still in shock and staring at us. “I apologize for the sudden appearance. It wasn’t supposed to go this way but since I’m here, Cheyenne would like me to introduce myself. So for the new people here today, Hi. I’m Koa.” She said sitting up proudly. When nobody said anything, Gunner stepped up to stand next to her. “Why don’t we take five?” Nods of agreement were seen from around the room along with the smirks of the lycans to the reactions of the new people to Koa.

I frowned. Shannon sighed and adjusted Russ in her arms as her older kids all looked at her like she had the answers to everything. And in a way, she does. Shannon knows the answers to their questions, at least from a third-person perspective. She knows everything that happened, and she knows her kids. So maybe she knows how to approach the subject of my being trans. “Aunt Shikoba isn’t anyone’s twin. The ‘Uncle’ Shane the rest of the family talks about, the one they act as if he died nine years ago. That’s Shikoba.” Shannon just jumped right in.

Ezra lowered his voice just enough for Shannon to hear as he squeezed her hand. “I’m going to protect you and we’ll pull through this until the end.” Shannon’s throat tightened, but she nodded, refusing to let tears rise in front of the cameras. She wouldn’t run anymore. She was ready to face Clarrise. *** Clarisse gripped the crystal tumbler so tightly her knuckles turned white. The screen in front of her played Ezra Barlowe’s press conference on a loop. Shannon Christensen stood beside him. Alive. Confident. Unbroken.
